{beach cottage design}

Hello beautiful friends!
How are you on this gorgeous sunshiney spring day???

Me....well you can bet I am beyond happy! I am sitting here  in my happy little sunroom, listening to the French Cafe station on Pandora, glass of wine poured and just plain soaking up the sunshine as I write this post!
I am like a whole new person when springtime hits....
the flowers start to bloom, the sun starts to show it's pretty little face and begin to feel the need to spruce my space. Kind of the like the way a sweet little birdy starts to feel the calling to build a nest:)
I may not live in a "real" beach cottage but home is 100% what you make it....so I choose to make my sunroom into my sweet little beach cottage!

It used to look like this.....
Still pretty cute {I think} but I was just ready for a lighter and brighter space.
Nothing that a couple of cans of spray could't take care of:)
I spray painted everything! The wicker chairs, the table set and just about anything else I could get my hands on!

I also re-purposed some simple things I had lying around the house!
1. paint and scuff your furniture
2. create a magnetic canvas board from $2 canvas and metal
3. paint and scuff up simple cardboard letters from the craft store
4. use simple and natural elements in your space

Happy and oh so simple!
Why would I paint and scuff perfectly perfect wicker chairs from Pier 1.....well because it makes me happy!!
I love that shabby, beachy cottage design and that was what I hope to feel in my spruced up sunroom!

You don't need to copy a design idea from a magazine....just do what makes you happy!!

I did keep my crazy table {a very old table from my grandparents} in the space. I've told you about the table before. But just in case you missed it.....it was an anniversary present from my grandpa to my grandma on their 30th anniversary! I am so honored to have it in my home!

I definitely think your home should have some crazy things that have deep meaning to you!

Your home should be a 100% reflection of you .... not of what magazines you read:)

And of course.....I included tons of turquoise! It is my "beach cottage" after all!!

Happy design doesn't need to be expensive or complicated! These sweet little jars are from a local Christmas Tree Shop and they only cost just over $1 each~  LOVE THEM:)

I also just moved one of my painted vases into the sunroom and included a sweet little clay tag!

I feel just like I have my own little beach cottage! And the view will even be beachier when we open the pool:)

It just makes me so happy to be in this room!
And it even matches my flip flops! Heehee:)

Do you have a favorite space in your home?!?

I think the slip cover will be perfect.
Wine spills...no problem...just take the cover off...wash it with bleach and it will be good as new:)

A must in my house! The wine gets spilled everywhere:)

Shabby...Beachy...Simple...Happy!
It might not make it into a magazine....but it sure makes me pretty happy:)

Hope you have a super happy and inspired Wednesday!

  1. I love your beachy sunroom - who cares if the beach just happens to be a little far from the view. It's out there somewhere. I love the white with turquoise - one of my fav colour combinations - and totally agree every home needs some quirky individual items that make it a home. For us it is rocks. We have them everywhere - on almost every windowsill etc. I'm glad you got a photo of yourself with the feet up and laptop where it should be. Enjoy!

  6. Great advice. Your room looks very comfortable and beachy yet the most important thing is how you feel when you are in it.

  13. I'm loving the beachy updates...so fresh and breezy!

We are moving this month and I'm busy painting with the most beachy shade of blue I could find. My kitchen is the next room to be painted and I went with turquoise and a bright green apple shade. It should be loads of fun. ;)

The picture of you blogging reminded me of all us girls writing out there in the blogosphere. With wine and French music you can't really get a better lift in your day.

From one 'beach' cottage to another. Have a great weekend

  29. As someone who has spent the vast majority of my life living at the shore, I can tell you that your room is PERFECTO!

I know the magazines can show you some gorgeous rooms, but if you're a REAL beach lover, they aren't practical. They just shout, "Don't track that sand in here!" or "Don't sit in that chair with your wet bathing suit!" or better yet, "Your pina colada left rings on the coffee table."

Your room says, "Come on in, sit a spell, relax, enjoy yourself and let's chat."

    Like I said, it's perfect!

  30. Looks like a great place to relax and just be yourself :) You're right about the magazines - they're great to get ideas, but the most important thing is to make sure your home reflects your life.
